PROJECT BRIEF

How we took off

Brno-Tuřany Airport, part of the Accolade group, has been going through its best years yet. It now offers more destinations than ever before, and has also broken a new record — 740,000 passengers handled in a single year. And it's exactly these travelers the new brno-airport.cz information site is built to serve.

The new website project was commissioned by Accolade, which has been running the airport since 2017. Once we'd made it through the tender, we got to work designing an intuitive, flexible site that would serve not just passengers but also showcase the airport's B2B offering — cargo, private, and training flights. The airport's cargo services used to have a separate website of their own, but that was about to change.

Another new factor we had to account for was the airport's new visual identity from the Visualio agency — a new logo and color scheme.

The site had to be clear, work great on mobile, and offer full content in English as well.

  • We've built dozens of e-shops and web portals by now. But building a brand-new website for the second-largest airport in Czechia, one that three-quarters of a million people pass through every year? That was both a commitment and a challenge for us.

For Brno Airport, we delivered the complete website — from a design built on thorough UX analysis all the way to the final build. It runs on our own CMS, Superadmin, which gives the client easy control over their content.

DEVELOPMENT PHASE

No autopilot here, just honest project management

We spent several intensive months developing and preparing the site. Close collaboration and communication with the client were key, since the project brief kept expanding and getting more specific as work progressed.

The entire UX of the site is centered on the needs of passengers and visitors. The homepage is built around an arrivals and departures board, the key element for orientation. Live flight information is displayed thanks to a connection to the airport's internal systems via an API.

UX like a thorough pre-flight check

Brno Airport typically sees heavy traffic during the summer season, when it sends tens of thousands of tourists and families with kids off on vacation. That's why it's essential everyone can easily find all the key information about parking, check-in, or baggage handling.

We also worked out how to display partner offers on the site — travel agencies and ticket sellers. A separate section is made up of the B2B section for cargo flights, airport rentals, and other services.

No turbulence, please

We put together a team for the project consisting of a project manager, a backend developer, two frontend developers, a tester, and a UX designer. From the start, they worked to make sure we built a modular website that would give the client as much freedom as possible. We weren't afraid of customization, and we put together dozens of components that make it possible to flexibly assemble pages with very different kinds of content.

Reaching new heights

As we filled out the site, we kept discovering that the existing blocks weren't enough for certain types of information. So we kept adding new variants on the fly — for example, the option to change font size, show a block with or without a heading, or use a block with an image, an icon, or as plain text. We also fine-tuned the format of several types of link hubs, FAQs, and various kinds of forms.

That gives the client a really wide range of options for putting together any new page on the site going forward. In the CMS, they simply build it like a set of building blocks, picking the components that suit the content.

We also kept in mind that unexpected situations can come up in aviation — ones that need a quick response and quick communication to passengers. That's why there's a ready-made information component that can be quickly filled in and shown as a news update on the site.

ROLLOUT AND RESULTS

Ready for takeoff

After several months of tweaking, coding, and testing with the client, we were ready to launch the new website, in both Czech and English

We got lucky that Brno's flight season isn't yet in full swing in February. For the hard cutover to the new site, we picked a window between one plane's departure and the next one's landing. We couldn't afford any complications or delays. And how did it go? If the passengers on board could have seen it, they'd definitely have applauded us after landing.

When a plan comes together

Brno Airport's new website is modern and, above all, clear. It's now easier for visitors to find their way around and intuitively locate what they need — flight schedules, parking options, check-in information. We also brought the airport's B2C and B2B presentation together in one place.

The biggest challenge for us was making the site truly modular — not just on paper, when we put together a sample page, but in real, everyday use.

How to build a 100% modular website

  1. Analysis

First, we need to think through every scenario that could come up.

  2. Development

Then we design each content block so it looks great in any combination.

  3. Review

At the same time, we have to keep the system simple, so the client's site administrator doesn't get lost in a flood of options.

How does the client rate our collaboration?

  • The airport's new website is the result of a truly close collaboration. The Superkoders team quickly grasped the specifics of the airport environment, and their know-how showed — they were proactive, came up with ideas, and the project kept moving forward smoothly as a result.

The result is a website our passengers will appreciate on every flight, one that's easy for us to manage, and one that gives us room to keep developing and improving it going forward.
